Dexus, son of Parris
Birthplace: Newbegin Age: 25 First appearance: Wasteland #2
Dexus is the Watchman, commander of Newbegin's city police and guards, themselves known as Disciples of the Watch. The post is traditionally a promotion from within the ranks of the Disciples, all of them Freemen, and Dexus is no exception.
Dexus is a career soldier, so much so that he has yet to marry or bear children, which is unusual in a city where the average age of marriage is fifteen. But Dexus has no time for such matters. An unruly child, Dexus' father gave him to the Watch at the age of just fourteen, hoping it would instil some honour and discipline in the young man.
It worked. Dexus quickly found the hard regime and physical demands of the Watch suited him, and has since devoted his life to its service. He rose rapidly through the ranks, attaining the rank of Sergeant at just sixteen, and his subsequent promotions came at a similar speed. He was already High Disciple, the Watchman's right-hand man, at the time of his predecessor's death in the line of duty. Dexus' ascent to Watchman went unchallenged and unopposed.
Dexus inspires loyalty in his Disciples, and his own loyalty to Marcus and Newbegin are beyond question. Many of the city Artisians regard him as little better than a slave, overly servile to Marcus and with little initiative of his own. But they are mistaken; Dexus plays the game of politics as well as anyone. And the growing schism over the city's Sunners may present him with the perfect opportunity to prove it...
