Jakob is the leader of Providence's trading party. Every two months he takes a party of men and dogs, laden with goods from Doc's trading post, to Newbegin. They sell what they have, buy what Providence needs, then return.
He's been doing it for ten years, first as an apprentice, then leading the party. Jakob's own childhood, growing up in the mid-sized city of Flad-Si-Dee, gives him a knowledge of city etiquette that no-one else in Providence has. It's a thankless task, but Jakob is glad to do it. It gets him back in a city, which he enjoys - and it's a necessity for the people of Providence, a town with meagre resources of its own.
But Jakob wouldn't do it at all if not for his constant companion, Abi. He knows the town's in good hands with her while he's away. And he knows she'll be safe so long as he keeps bringing food and bullets back from the city. Living in Providence may be dull at times, but it's stable and free from danger.
Jakob's feelings for Abi are complex, but there's no doubt that he loves her. So when Michael arrives in town, reviving a long-suppressed wanderlust in Abi, Jakob sees Michael as just one thing. A threat.
Just how far Jakob will go to protect Abi is a question Michael's about to have answered.
