For eighty years, Marcus has presided over the establishment and growth of Newbegin, now the largest city in the known world with a population approaching 50,000.

The official legend, told by the priests of Marcus' religion, has it that Marcus founded the city after seeing the devastation of the Big Wet. While walking through the American desert, he stopped atop a mesa and, weeping at the state of the world, took out his own eyes so that he would never have to see it again. Instead, Marcus had a vision on the mesa and single-handedly built Newbegin on that very spot. A short time later it was finished and he opened the doors to Artisians, freemen and their wives.

Since then Marcus has led the city council and church together, wielding an enormous amount of influence and power. He is an enigmatic and rarely seen figure in the city, a deified figurehead who allegedly has dream visions of the future and can never die.

The truth is lost in the fog of time and politics. Only Marcus knows for sure why he founded the city, why he styled himself as a god, why he has lived so long.

But the rise of the Sunners, and Michael and Abi's journey to Newbegin, will give Marcus doubt that he knows the truth of anything at all.
