Neelan, son of Josif
Birthplace: Newbegin Age: 33 First appearance: Wasteland #9
Neelan, like many of the Newbegin council, is from an established line of Artisians who have served the city since its founding.
Ark-teks by trade and learning, Neelan's forefathers helped Marcus design most of Newbegin. His grandfather, Mordumer, designed the temple to Marcus that stands in the city's main square. His father Josif designed the council building itself, and began the design of the vast walls that surround the city, keeping its residents safe.
When Josif died Neelan continued this work, overseeing completion of the walls. He went on to design the metalcar platforms, and other prominent structures in the modern city.
Neelan's family line is respected, and in good standing with the council.
But all that is now threatened. Neelan's brother died while still a boy, leaving him as the sole male to continue the bloodline. His wife died giving birth, and his only child is his daughter, Lyndder.
An Artisian in such a situation would be expected to marry again, and bear more children to beget an heir, but there is more to Neelan's tragedy. Lyndder is perpetually ill, with an unknown condition that often renders her unable to walk or even speak.
Neelan regularly misses council meetings to look after Lyndder, and his work has begun to suffer as he instead studies his vast library of more than fifty books, searching to cure his daughter. All thoughts of heirs and bloodline appear to have been pushed from his mind, and despite his skills and knowledge, Neelan is becoming a punchline in Artisian circles. Even his closest friend, Frodrik, has turned on him.
Now, Neelan's fate hangs in the balance, for aiding and harbouring Michael and Abi. He prays his family's standing will be enough to save him...
