Ameer Jahdun is a trader to his bones.
Born to the legendary Sultan Bariq, as Bariq's machine caravan travelled the desert wastes, Ameer learnt everything his father could teach him, with an ambition to match his acumen.
But the young Ameer possessed one thing his father did not; a belief that the wisdom of “low men”, the everyday traders and guards who financed and protected the caravan on a day-to-day basis, was as useful as that of the council Bariq kept to discuss his policies.
Expressing this belief got Ameer in trouble more than once. He would argue freely with the council, and often petitioned for prominent caravan traders to be given a voice. Bariq despaired of his son's idealism, and went to his grave imploring his favourite wife, Shazzi, to keep the boy in check.
To the council's surprise, Shazzi agreed with Ameer.
Within weeks of inheriting the caravan, Sultan Ameer and the council were at an impasse. Finally he saw that the council would never allow ”low men“ to join the ”high carriages“, and cut through the knot with one simple stroke — by dissolving the council entirely.
Sultan Ameer now runs one of the largest and most profitable machine caravans in the world, a ruthless but pragmatic businessman.
There isn't much Sultan Ameer has not seen in the world. But his relationship with Michael, which is antagonistic at best, will force him into situations even a Sultan would never dream of.
